International World Water Day has held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day.
TNW organized an event on the occasion of World Water Day at village Bherowal, district Khanewal. A large number of community representatives, civil society organizations, government department representatives and students have participated in the event. The purpose of the event was to share awareness on SDG # 6, clean water and sanitation, the importance of water resources, use of water and role of community in keep water resources safe and secure.
Mr. Zafar Iqbal, Executive Director, The NGO World, addressed the participants. He emphasized the importance of World Water Day. He gave orientation on SDG # 6, which refers to Clean Water & Sanitation. He told that Pakistan and other countries of the world agreed to work for the availability and access to clean water till 2030. It is our mutual and collective responsibility to not only safe water but makes resources and keep water safe. Clean water contributes our health and economic condition. He appreciated the community of Bherowal on having Pakistan’s first ever village to use the technology of Bio-Sand Water Filtration. Most of the population of Bherowal is benefiting from this technology. Mr. Zafar Iqbal, congratulate Mr. Irfan ul Haq of Waseb organization on working on this technology and provide clean drinking water to the community.
Social Welfare Officer Khanewal also addressed to the participants. He appreciated the efforts of Waseb and Bherowal community. He also congratulates TNW on arranging such important event on such important issue. Water is basic to life. Everyone should play his/her role to use water sensibly.
Mr. Irfan Ul Haq from Waseb organization shared his views on World Water Day. He told that his organization is working on a water project for last 15 years. They work on Bio-sand Filtration technology. This is very cheap and user-friendly. He shared that most population of Bherowal is benefiting from this technology.
One of the benefits of this Bio Sand filtration technology told that they are very happy to have this technology. They are blessed to have clean drinking water at the doorstep. Due to the availability of clean water, health is remarkably improved. Now they wish and suggest other communities to use this technology and make their life healthy.
In the end, Mr. Zafar Iqbal inaugurated a signature campaign to pledge for Clean Water.
