Beyond Aid: Karachi Seminar Marks World NGO Day with Focus on Social Enterprise Transformation

On February 27th, 2024, The NGO World Foundation organized a seminar at a local hotel in Karachi to commemorate World NGO Day, bringing together over 100 participants from various sectors, including corporate entities, government officials, and both national and international NGOs. The event, themed “BEYOND AID: Reshaping NGOs into Social Enterprises,” aimed to not only celebrate the significant contributions of NGOs but also to explore innovative strategies for transforming them into sustainable social enterprises.

Distinguished figures from the sector graced the seminar with their insightful presentations and sessions. Notable speakers included Abdul Hameed Shaikh, Director of Voluntary Agencies at the Social Welfare Department of the Government of Sindh; Mohammed Saleem, Chairman of FITWELL HUB; and Ghulam Shabbir, CEO of Momentum Consultants. Dr. Mumtaz Ali, Raza Abbas, and Humaira Bachal also shared their expertise on the evolving landscape of NGOs and the importance of adapting to new paradigms.

Halil Ibrahim Başaran from TIKA delivered a compelling keynote address, emphasizing the imperative of collaboration and synergy within the NGO sector to drive meaningful social change. Additionally, Mr. Faisal Edhi, chairman of the renowned Edhi Foundation, was honored for his exceptional humanitarian endeavors, underscoring the pivotal role of individuals in driving impactful initiatives. Murat Güzeller, Vice Consul General of the Republic of Turkey in Karachi, graciously accepted an honorary shield on behalf of the consulate, further reinforcing the spirit of international cooperation.

Furthermore, the seminar recognized exemplary individuals for their outstanding contributions to the sector. SWERA Awards were presented to Ms. Fiza Pitafi, Mr. Mujahid Ahmed Jokhio, and Mr. Mehran Baloch, highlighting their dedication and commitment to social causes.

Mr. Marcis Liors Skadmanis, the visionary founder of World NGO Day, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Zafar Iqbal for his unwavering support and instrumental role in establishing and promoting the significance of this day on the global calendar.

As the seminar drew to a close, participants were invigorated by a shared vision of collaboration, innovation, and resilience within the NGO sector. The event served as a catalyst for renewed commitment and collective action towards building a more inclusive and sustainable future for all.
